[MONTREAL, QC] — Transcontinental Inc. said Monday it is now the sole owner of the Metro Montreal newspaper, which it previously shared with newspaper publisher Gesca.

Terms of the deal for the weekday paper and its interactive versions were not immediately available.

Transcontinental president and chief executive Francois Olivier called the move excellent news for TC Media and its clients, advertisers and readers.

"It will also increase the advertising opportunities for Metro Montreal, primarily through links with other TC Media products, which should create new and interesting possibilities for our advertisers," Olivier said in a statement.

The company said the paper will maintain close ties with Metro International.

Metro Montreal was launched in 2001 and is published Monday to Friday.

Transcontinental said earlier this year that its plan to launch a television production business will create content that can be cross fed with its magazine, newspaper and digital operations.

The company had said it's not looking to become a broadcaster but wants to leverage the content already produced in its other platforms.
